The first in Hitachi's compact Pro Series of cordless tools, the DS18DSALmeasures only 7.7 inches in length and weighs 3.5 pounds, making it easy to hold and use all day without stress or strain. The compact design also provides the power and performance of a pro-grade 18-volt tool, making operation as efficient and dependable as it is comfortable.

Variable Speed and 22-Stage Clutch for Versatility
This impressive driver drill features a variable speed trigger to set speed from zero to 350 RPM or zero to 1,500 RPM so you always match the right speed to the job. Additionally, the clutch has 22 driving stages and a special mode for drilling, allowing for both high torque applications and precision driving.

First-in-its-Class Torque for Heavy-Duty Jobs
With unmatched torque in its class, the DS18DSAL powers through even the toughest jobs. 460 in./lbs. of torque gives this easy-to-handle model the necessary boost to take on hardwoods, masonry, and other heavy-duty drilling.

Belt Hook, LED Light, and 1/2-Inch Ratcheting Chuck for User-Friendly Operation
The DS18DSAL comes with a convenient metal belt hook and an LED job light to illuminate your work surface. It also features a keyless 1/2-inch ratcheting metal chuck that accepts a wide variety of bits, giving you greater flexibility. Finally, externally accessible carbon brushes allow you to easily and economically replace the brushes when they are worn, thus ensuring longer tool life.

Lightweight 1.5 Ah Lithium Ion Slide Battery for Long-Lasting Power
This driver drill is powered by a long-lasting 1.5 Ah lithium ion slide battery. Designed without the vertical chamber of a post-style battery, this battery glides easily into place and allows the DS18DSAL to have an ergonomic handle. And because this Lithium Ion battery weighs roughly half as much as a NiCd or NiMH battery, you can work longer, with better accuracy.
Steady Stream of Power for Precision and Consistency
As with all of Hitachi's lithium ion batteries, the tool receives a steady stream of power for the duration of every battery charge, from the moment the trigger is pulled until the charge cycle is exhausted. And with up to three times the number of charge cycles of traditional batteries, you won't have to waste money on costly replacements.

Included Lithium Ion Flashlight for Added Flexibility
As a bonus, the DS18DSAL comes with Hitachi's UB18DAL Lithium Ion Flashlight. Adjustable to five lighting positions, this flashlight stands alone while you work and can be aimed where you need illumination. A shoulder strap makes for easy, comfortable carrying, and a low-battery indicator light helps ensure that you don't run out of power mid-use. And because the UB18DAL runs on the same 18-volt slide batteries as the driver drill, it shares the same lithium ion benefits of long battery life, lasting power per charge, and lightweight convenience.

Warranty Information
For even more value and peace of mind, each of these tools is covered by Hitachi's 10-year lithium ion tool warranty and two-year lithium ion battery warranty.

Hit & Miss

I purchased two of these. The first one showed up and worked like a charm. I travel with it, so I ordered a second for home. After a lot of travel, I was finally able to test the second one. Dead. The batteries charge, the flashlight works, but the drill is completely dead. I missed the window for returns by 3 days. So, you might get one that works and you might not, but make sure you test it immediately.

Drill baby, drill!

I’ve had this for a little over a year and a half, and love it. I originally purchased it for small projects around the apartment, but recently purchased a new home. This cordless drill/driver has been fantastic. I’ve used it for multiple home projects, big and small. I even used it for drilling through a steel seat mount in my race car, and it handled it no problem.

Expensive batteries

Bought this for my son. A year or so later, I was over at his house helping him with some repairs. He had two batteries and both had issues with charging or holding a charge. We went to the store to buy new batteries and the price of two batteries was over what I paid for this … so I checked online and the price of the batteries was not a lot better … still just about an acceptable tradeoff to buy a new drill. Before you buy this, check the current price of batteries and factor that into the decision. In addition, I have never had batteries for a drill fail as quickly as these did. It doesn’t do any good to have a lifetime warranty if the price of the batteries is approaching the cost of the drill.

Great Set for Anyone

This drill/flashlight set is great. The flashlight does use one of the batteries, so you may or may not want to use it a lot. It works nice for just small jobs because the flashlight will rotate up and down. The flashlight will also stand up by itself, so you don’t need an extra hand to hold it.

great foundation kit for Hitachi tool system

great foundation kit for Hitachi tool system – two batteries are supplied. been using it for house deck work and making container for raised garden bed. totally lives up to high rating from independent non-profit consumer ratings organization. recommend getting hex to 1/4in square and hex to 3/8in square drive adapters to use with hex sockets (handier than manual ratchet drive). also very pleased with the C18DGL Circular Saw (purchased separately)

"wow" what a tool

 on November 17, 2013

I was expecting to do A big job so I waited four months to use the tool and see what would happen on the big job. “WOW”. First let me say that I always read a bunch of reviews before I buy and I get the feeling that a lot of contractors have rated the tool. The demand that a contractor has is not the same as for you and me. Having said that, I think anyone should be happy with this tool. I don’t know how you can judge how long a battery will last. I worked about three to four hours a day making a wood shop. When I was working with pine the battery ran out in about a week but when I was working with oak it ran out in two days. I changed the battery and charged the used one and just kept on going. At the end of the day I put the charged battery back in the case. A complaint made by others is it just ran out without warning. Big deal, just change the battery, why would you want it to slow down first. I am lazy and used the Philips bit to make my countersink. The battery lasted from the day I bought it till the middle of the first week of the big job. I just moved into a new house and I used the clutch for things like towel bars and putting in the medicine chest. The balance, grip, power and magnetic bit made the job done in seconds. The flashlight is good if you think of it as a flashlight, it is not a flood light. I doubt that I would use the flashlight much but it was a good excuse in order to get the extra battery. Two new battery’s would cost more then this set so this is a good deal. The other silly complaint was that the carrying case is awkward. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. The case is awkward but the drill works great. Everybody should love this tool.

Great All-Purpose Drill

I have been through various cordless drills as a casual home DIYer, and this Hitachi is the best I have owned. It comes with 2 batteries, which is a huge plus, because who wants to wait for your battery to charge in the middle of a project. The design is eye catching, but then my top and main criteria are around performance. That is where this cordless drill shines. It has enough power to drill through any of the various materials I have needed it to. It has a good battery life. The adjustable torque is great for when you need to power up through some dense wood, or power down when putting in or removing screws. At 3.5 pounds, it is light enough to hold for extended periods of time. I have not used the included flashlight, but would come in handy when working in the attic, crawlspace, etc.
