Good, heavy duty drill

 on May 6, 2014
By The Blackjack Kid
Good, heavy duty drill. One main problem exists with this drill. Small drill bits tend to fall out of the chuck. No matter how tight you may turn the chuck, small, round bits will fall out, usually before you compete drilling the hole. No problem with larger bits or with bits with a six sided shank, just small bits like anything 3/16″ or under. Other than that, it works fine. I use this drill/driver only as a drill. I use the smaller DeWalt 760 for a screw driver. When using small drill bits, I find it easier to use the 760. It never drops a drill bit like this one does.

This drill/driver is a tremendous tool!

This purchase is my second experience with this model of drill/driver, I wore the first one out after extensive use. This drill/driver has tremendous power as long as you use the “regular” batteries, the new “advanced technology” batteries are worthless, they die off immediately, no warning that they are running low on power. Don’t purchase these batteries; also, stay completely away from the “rebuilt” drills and drivers, I have purchased three (3) and every one was nonfunctional and would not work; the cost of returning the tool was prohibitive, so I ate the loss!

I needed a hammer drill and decided to purchase this, as it is almost an “all in one.” Let me say that it has performed excellently during its first major project. I was installing a power rack and needed to drill 24 3″ holes in concrete slab. This did the complete job ON THE SAME BIT! Using the hammer drill setting will eat through the batteries, but I had 2 spare XRPs always on charge. It took a beating during its first mission. I now call this drill “War Drill.”

I have several Dewalt18v batteries, chargers and tools. The last 18v drill I had lasted 12 years of home use and at work. This new drill keeps me rolling with all my current batteries, chargers etc. If I wasn’t so heavily fortified with 18v stuff, I would get the newer 20v Dewalt tools. They seem lighter and I believe you get longer battery use (use between charges) from the 20v tools. I don’t know how long the 20v batteries will last long term (meaning years) as I don’t own any.

Two years on…gears are stripped!

After having used this product solely as a drill/screwdriver for just two years, the gears are shot! Item just grinds no matter what setting it is in. Won’t drive a simple screw! Not the kind of quality I would expect from DeWalt. I have owned a DeWalt cordless combo drill driver/circular saw for more than twenty years and have only ever needed to upgrade to new batteries! What has happened to this company’s quality? Were either of these purchases just a fluke?

Didn’t find it any better than a drill on its hammer setting

My Dewalt 18v drill, which I love, has a hammer setting that was just not doing the job of drilling 1 1/4″ holes into poured concrete. It was taking me 10-15 minutes with new Dewalt DW5221 bits. So I ordered this drill, and unfortunately, it did no better at all. (I ended up getting a rotary hammer which drills a hole in less than 2 seconds.)

Great Tool!

I got this to help with installing replacement windows in block home where I would be drilling pilot holes for installing screws into the block, the hammer drill mode worked great! drilled the holes much quicker and easier than using my old standard drill with masonry bits. this is definitely one of the best investments I have made and with the free one-day shipping it arrived on the day I got my windows picked up.

Very good product and cost effective

I just received this item today so have not had time to actually drill a hole with it. My review is based upon first impressions and my satisfaction with the purchase experience. The drill appears to be of VERY high quality with power to spare. Because I had another 18v Dewalt product (a Dewalt 18v Impulse driver with 2 batteries) I had a spare 18v battery so opted to buy the bare tool only with no battery, charger or case. I do wish that the case had been included, but can store the drill and spare battery in my tool chest. I paid about $15 less on Amazon.com than this bare tool was selling for on most other sites. Amazon shipped it UPS and it arrived only 2 days after I placed the order. The drill will be replacing a DeWalt 9.6v drill I’ve had for about 10-12 years. That drill served me well, but the batteries were no longer able to hold a charge for more than a few days, even if the tool was not used during that time. When I priced the 9.6v battery ONLINE, it made more sence to upgrade the drill to a 18v hammer drill (for which I had a spare battery) and use my impulse driver to drive screws. The drill has a bright LED which lights as you lightly press the trigger (before the chuck starts to turn) so you can get the drill properly located before starting to drill. Having metal gears adds quality but does add weight to this drill. The bare tool weighs 5 pounds. Add about 2.5 lbs for the battery. It is well balanced however and does not feel much different than my old DeWalt 9.6v drill. So far, I’m very pleased with this product and would recommend it to anyone who already has another source for a DeWalt 18v battery.

DEWALT Bare-Tool DCD950B 1/2-Inch 18-Volt XRPHammerdrill/Drill/Driver

I like everything about DeWalt 18-Volt Hammerdrills but the clutch mechanisms. This is my third XRP Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver in as many years. Yes, they get a thorough work out in my Construction business, and yes, they are workhorses, but come on. DeWalt wants $ 99.99 to replace the clutch and/or brushes at their factory service centers and they will only give you a 90 day warranty. Doing the math, I find it cheaper in the long run to just buy a new one bare. I am already so heavily invested in the DeWalt 18-Volt Ecosystem…OK…”ecosystem” isn’t the correct word to use here, but that’s how I feel…that I can’t afford to look at other options at this particular point in time, but eventually, something has to give. Four stars. It is a workhorse…as long as it is working…

This is one of Dewalt’s highest rated hammer drills. I bought one used and then purchased a brand new one because I wanted it to last for years to come. I’m very happy with the drill and fully expect it to last me the next 15-20 years or longer since I only use it for home projects.
