Cordless Drills. Choosing A Cordless Drill That Is Right For You

Hi everyone,

1390077797887_various-cordless-drills.jpgChris Caldon here. Hope everyone has had a great weekend. Mine was good, just finishing up a “side-job” building some counter-tops and cabinet doors for a client. While working at his house this weekend he was asking me about cordless drills and what are the best ones to buy so I thought I would answer that question in a post on my blog & hopefully help others with the same question.

I get asked this question a lot, “what is the best cordless drill?” and there is no easy answer to this question without asking some questions. I, like everyone who uses cordless drills have my favorite brand of cordless drill but my cordless drill may not be what works for you and your situation. Here are some questions that I ask people when they ask me what the best cordless drill is.

  1. What will you be using the cordless drill for?
  2. Will you be drilling or driving?
  3. Into what material will you be drilling into?
  4. If drilling, what size and types of bits will you be using?
  5. If driving, what size and type of screws will you be driving?
  6. Will your cordless drill be used at home or on a job-site?

Lets say your answer to #1 is “installing new cabinet hardware on my existing cabinetry”. Having done this a million times I can deduce that you will be drilling a 3/16′ hole through 3/4″ wood and then driving a 1″ screw into the hardware. Having done this before I can answer questions 2-6 with your answer to question #1. For this application you won’t need a huge 20 volt Hammer Drill and a 12 volt drill would be ample a sufficient for your use and would be a perfect drill for you to use around your house for a number of applications and for you I would recommend any of these .

Let’s say your answer to #1 is “building a new backyard shed which will need to be anchored into a concrete footing”. From this answer I can deduce that you will likely be driving larger screws into flooring, door and window jambs and attaching bottomplates to the concrete footings and for this you would need as much power as you can afford. You will need longer lasting batteries that charge quickly and you will need the hammer-drilling functionality that some cordless drills do not have. For this application I highly suggest any of these c

And lets say your answer to # 1 is”I will be building some cabinetry and bookcases for my den”. From this I can deduce that you as well need a larger drill with plenty of power and batteries that charge quickly but you on’t necessarily need the hammer-drill functinality. You will probably be pre-drilling some countersink holes and driving some 2″ screws and such and for this application my suggestion would be any of these

Cordless Drills. Choosing A Cordless Drill That Is Right For You

As you can see depending on what your application, your choice of cordless drills will vary immensely, so do your homework before you purchase a cordless drill and ask yourself honestly what you will be using it for and make the most out of the cordless drill that you do decide to go with.

I hope this post has shed some light on choosing the right cordless drill for your next project. If you have any questions just contact me here on my site and I will be glad to help you out if I can.
